CLEBURNE, Texas -- Axel Johnson extended his hitting streak to eight games with a first-inning single, but the Railroaders fell 13-3 to the Wichita Wingnuts in the series opener at The Depot Friday night.
Johnson had two of Cleburne’s eight hits -- but Matt Chavez drove in six runs with a pair of singles and a three-run homer, and Christian Stringer finished a home run shy of the cycle. The 13 runs scored were the most the Railroaders have given up in a game this year.
James Land drove in his first professional RBI and doubled in the seventh inning, and Bryce Beeler -- a pitcher who had to play second base as a necessity -- collected his first professional hit in the sixth inning.
Wander Perez, making his second start of 2017, gave up four runs on six hits over three innings, and Onas Farfan was pegged for six runs on eight hits over three innings of relief. Dylan Mouzakes gave up one run over an inning, and Harrison Lee gave up a pair of runs in his inning of work.
Shawn Zarraga made his second career professional pitching appearance, and threw a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
Game 2 of the three-game set is scheduled for 7:06 p.m., and the Railroaders Pregame Show will begin at 6:45 p.m. Good tickets are still available and can be purchased online at www.railroaderbaseball.com or by visiting the box office located near the main gate at The Depot.
