KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Aug. 12, 2019) – After two dominant starts in which he allowed just four combined hits, Cleburne Railroaders pitcher Stephen Johnson has been named Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on August 11.
Johnson becomes the second Railroaders arm in 2019 to be named Pitcher of the Week, joining Jesus Sanchez, who earned the award on May 20 for his Opening Night start.
The right-hander put together two of the most dominant starts of any Cleburne hurler in 2019, beginning with a masterful outing against the Sioux Falls Canaries on August 5. Johnson became the first Railroaders starter to work into the ninth inning this season, allowing just two hits and one earned run over eight innings while striking out nine. In his latest outing against the Sioux City Explorers on August 10, Johnson did not allow a hit for the first 5.2 innings and ultimately surrendered only two over seven strong innings.
All told, Johnson finished the week 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in 15.0 total innings. He struck out 12, walked two, and allowed four hits.
Johnson’s addition has bolstered the American Association’s best pitching staff, as the Railroaders lead the circuit with a 3.67 ERA. Since being acquired from the Atlantic League’s High Point Rockers, Johnson has gone 7-1 with a 2.89 ERA in eight appearances. Opponents are hitting just .237 against him, with 34 strikeouts to 16 walks.
The Railroaders continue their road swing with a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones on Monday night. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
